Request for Proposals

Submission Deadline: March 31, 2010

Applicants must submit their portfolio to us online at: http://intothearts.slideroom.com

An Open Information Session will be held Tuesday, March 2nd, from 5:00-6:00p.m. at the Arts Council Offices at 305 West 4th St. in Winston-Salem for artists who have questions about the RFP or Slideroom.

Background and Location

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is renovating and enlarging the historic Sawtooth Building in downtown Winston-Salem. It will offer space for the Sawtooth School for Visual Arts, art exhibitions, receptions, meetings, and offices. With the conversion of an adjacent warehouse into HanesBrands Theater for theatrical, music and dance performances and movies, the entire complex will be renamed as Downtown Center for The Arts. Construction should be complete by late spring 2010.

Call to Local Artists

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem Forsyth County is seeking proposals from artists to transform a series of five inoperable corrugated metal doors, formerly fire doors, hung on the side walls of the new HanesBrands Theatre. The doors will be fixed in place prior to artistic treatment.  Only the face of each door will be exposed. All the walls of the theater are painted a very dark blue.

Artist Eligibility

The Arts Council will consider proposals only from professional artists in Forsyth County and surrounding counties (Yadkin, Stokes, Davidson, Davie, Surry) and from artists who have ties to Winston-Salem.

Budget:

The Arts Council will spend $5,000 for all five doors, or $1,000 per door. The budgeted amount will include artist's fee, materials, labor, and travel expenses.

Descriptions of Doors:

The doors vary in size: one 6'8"x 7'9", three 4'x 7'9", and one 4 ½' x 3'8". The top edge of each door is slightly angled from one side to the other. The vertically corrugated metal on the face of the doors is framed on each edge by a 1 ½ " flat metal band.  The distance between the peak of adjacent crests is 2 ½ ".  The troughs are 1/2" deep.

There are no preconceived themes or limits on style or choice of materials for application to the doors, but structural integrity cannot be altered.
