I would like to pursue a double major in English Education and Music Education so I can combine my passions of English and Music in my career.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment was becoming the first chair tuba of my school’s Wind Ensemble after only one semester of playing.

Elaina Garner

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School

Nominating Teacher: Martha Garrett

Arts Discipline: Visual Art

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 4.56

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? The Matisse/ Fauvism unit has been my favorite part so far. I enjoyed studying the Fauvist moment and using their painting technique that involves bold lines, vivid colors , and depth.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Currently, I do not know where I am going to college. But I am applying to many different schools. Some of my top schools are U Chicago, Brown, UC Berkeley, and Caltech. I just really want to get out of North Carolina and experience a new environment and I want to major in biology.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? The first answer that popped into my head was when I was awarded second in the state for the painting category in a 4H artistic expression contest. But my true top accomplishment is how I’ve grown as an artist by stepping our of my artistic comfort zone and trying new types of art as well as continuously improving on the skills that I already possess.

How will the arts influence your future career? Honestly I cannot tell you how art will influence my future career. Maybe I will become a street artist like Banksy (my inspiration) or instead of majoring in biology and becoming a biologist, I’ll pursue an art-related career. Another option could be finding a way so that I can become a biologist and utilize my artistic abilities within the field.

GPA/QPA: 3.1

What is your favorite part of the arts genre for which you were selected? The teamwork required both onstage and off in order to create a good performance has allowed me to express my opinions and ideas in a constructive manner, as well as learn techniques and approaches from others. My life has been based in theater and it has allowed me to meet people I now call family. On stage, you share a part of your self that without a script, that part of you may never come out and it lays in a bond of trust with your fellow actors that I’ve only experienced  with my actual family otherwise.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would very much like to go to Western Carolina University, where I have been accepted, because they have a General Stage and Screen major that teaches both on and off stage skills. I chose this program because I have grown fond of being a “Jack of all trades” and being able to whatever is required of me in terms of theater.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Last fall, I stage managed a show called Bell, Book, and Candle at Stained Glass Playhouse. This has been my only time to stage manage a community theater production, and I loved it. I experienced both sides of stage, seeing the actors grow into parts, plan the sets with the set designer and director and call the show during its performances. I was proud to be a part of it.

How will the arts influence your future career? I plan to become a theater arts teacher, so the arts will very much influence my career. The artistic ideas I’ve learned and the technical concepts I’ve been taught have no doubt created a framework for my future career as I have seen and been every level and job in the theatre.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about music is the eloquence in which it was formulated and the total use of the entire brain to make it come alive. The composers of the eras of music long since past paved the way for a cyclic development in music to arise through improvisation and standard composition techniques, but these master composers left it up to performers like myself to interpret and make the music come to life. Music creates a connected strand of life from the composer to the performer thus developing an untapped yet timeless eloquence not seen in any other area of life.

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts will greatly influence my future career as I plan on being a professor in music, because I see the joy it brings my cello professor Dr. Brooks Whitehouse. I want to instill in my future students, as Dr. Whitehouse has done for me, the love and immense satisfaction music can give at any stage in life and show them how to channel life’s toughest challenges into this emotion, this music which transcends the usefulness of finite words and confusing thoughts. I also hope to one day be an entrepreneur in the field of music, possible beginning my own business to bring music to those not fortunate enough to afford instruments or lessons that they too may experience the wonders of music.
