What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love Musical Theatre. Musical Theatre can convey layers of meaning in an instant through the beautiful melding of song, dance, acting, effects, and staging.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would like to go to an art centered college. I would like to get a BFA in Musical Theatre or Theatre Arts. Some of the colleges I am interested in are Wesleyan, UNCG, Yale School of Drama, UCLA, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Julliard, and ACT.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? That is a difficult question since each arts experience and accomplishment has different merits. I have really enjoyed working with HPCT in Harvey.

How will the arts influence your future career? I do want to follow a career in the arts. This may seem like a lofty goal and I know the risks but Theatre Arts is my passion and I cannot imagine doing anything else. I can not change who I am nor do I want to. Heather Ash

Parkland High School

Principal: Spencer Hardy

SAM Coordinator: Tara Hauser

Nominating Teacher: Steven McCarthy

Arts Discipline: Visual Arts

Grade: 11

GPA/QPA: 4.7

What is your favorite part of the arts genre for which you were selected? Working with different mediums for each project, I was able to explore different methods of expression. I had to decide how I wanted to express myself using different art forms that I may not normally use.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would like to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) to study Animation. I would like to design and create my own cartoon show for Cartoon Network!

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Overall, I’m proud I have had the opportunity to explore so many different mediums and artistic styles that I may have not attempted before. Of my own artworks, I am happiest with my latest piece Gryphon. I was able to do a lot of research into the background, and worked on the largest canvas I have ever gotten to work with (45 x 29).

How will the arts influence your future career? I feel that art has been a part of my life since I was very young. I’ve always liked designing creatures and monsters, and really got into drawing in middle school. Now that I have the freedom to do what I want, I can do what I love, while still exploring different outlets of artistic expression. Some people may think that doing what you want would keep you confined to your experiences and create a bias with your work. I feel that it has done the opposite. I have researched topics that I was interested in, which pushed me into new areas of interest. Exploring why I personally love art has become a power to guide me when expressing myself and I feel that, without art, I would not be anywhere close to who I am today. With art as my fuel, I can look into future art careers I would have never considered, and explore different aspects of art expression I may have never contemplated.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Wingate University, Sport and Fitness Management.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Getting inducted into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts is my proudest artistic moment. Getting to be a part of that organization has encouraged me to keep strong in school and grades.

How will the arts influence your future career? Dance has influenced my future career by giving me the confidence to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. Dance has also influenced me because I have met some of the nicest people. People that I used to just pass in the hallways are my friends now. The bond, especially, that I have formed with my dance teachers, has been remarkable. I know that I can talk to them about anything and everything, and they will always have advice to give. I am so glad dance was part of my high school experience; it has made me a better person on the inside

Emily Graves

Reynolds High School

Principal: Leslie Alexander

Nominating Teacher: Johnathan Hamiel

Arts Discipline: Band

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 4.6

What is your favorite part of the arts genre for which you were selected? My favorite part of band is hearing a certain section play and then trying to pick out their part when the whole band plays. I like being able to discern different melodies, harmonies, and chords when the entire band is playing.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would most like to attend Boston College, because they have amazing programs and a great marching band, and double major in International Relations and Russian, in order to work for the State Department and the US Embassy in Moscow.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I would have to say either making All-District Band, because the music level is much more challenging and it’s fun meeting people from a greater area than just the county; getting lead roles in the Summer Enrichment musicals, because leads carry the show and it’s awesome to be able to sing by yourself on the stage; or being chosen to be drum major, because it’s a huge honor and a big responsibility to lead the entire marching band.

How will the arts influence your future career? I would like to work with Russian orphanages in the future, and so I want to teach the orphans how to use and play music to express themselves and further their development. My plan is to also minor in Musical Theatre, so that I can fall back on it if I need to, because I love musicals and would enjoy working on or off Broadway.

Pearle Lavery

Salem Academy

Head of School: Lisa Pence

Nominating Teacher: Joy Rushton

Arts Discipline: Music, Theatre

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 2.8

What is your favorite part of the arts genre for which you were selected? In music, I like how creative you can be, even though there are guidelines. For instance, you can’t change the notes or words of a song but when you sing, it will be in your voice. You can do a riff if you want or you can add or reduce the vibrato. Every voice is different and you really get to hear that in solos. I also like having to make sure all the voices blend together when you are singing in a group. It is very challenging but when you sing in a group you have to sound like one big voice. I like having to really listen to others and change my voice to blend with theirs. In drama, I like being able to step into others shoes. Everyone has such unique and different stories and to be able to study those individuals and try to get into their mind is such an amazing opportunity. I really like physiology so I think it is such an honor to try to get into their minds and to feel what they are feeling. I just love every aspect. I love becoming different people because it makes me more worldly and comprehending of others and what they are feeling.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? University of North Carolina School of the Arts for Drama.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Going to the Tony Awards in 2014. I got to see my biggest role model: Hugh Jackman and it opening my eyes to who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do. It reassured me that I wanted to be an actress. Being in a room filled with that many amazing people was life changing.

How will the arts influence your future career? I want to be an actress, so the arts will influence that a lot! I love drama and singing so much. I just always have and I probably always will. There are so many amazing people in the arts whom I look up to so much like Patrick Osteen, Chessa Mets, Isaac Powell, Mrs. Overton, Ms. Rushton, Mr. and Mrs. Lawson, Hugh Jackman, and so many more. The arts provide amazing role models and amazing talent.

Ray Dongkun Yang

UNCSA

Dean: Brian Cole

Nominating Teacher: Oskar Espina-Ruiz

Arts Discipline: Music

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 3.92

What is your favorite part of the arts genre for which you were selected? There’s a joy that comes with playing music, as it says what cannot be expressed with words. There’s a rich cultural background behind every piece of music, and discovering a piece’s secrets and the experiencing the emotional ideas of the composer is a rewarding and enthralling journey. Connecting those journeys to parallel struggles in my own journey establishes a strong bond with music as a whole. Music is also a language without barriers, so a composer’s passions, struggles, and emotional journeys can be conveyed to many people without uttering a single word.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would love to attend Case Western Reserve University and participate in the dual degree program with CIM to major in both Mechanical Engineering and Oboe Performance. I love to build scale models of machines and I would love to work with the full sized ones in my future.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Albeit a bit typical, my life as a musician was most influenced by performing the Mozart Oboe Concerto in C Major from memory. While I was learning the piece, I had a change of oboe teachers, and my entire world turned on its head, leaving the piece as my emotional support during turbulent times. The 24 minute performance took nearly a year of emotional and physical perseverance, and it gave me a strong understanding of my abilities as an oboist and an appreciation for hard work.

How will the arts influence your future career? My ideal career would be working in a machine shop to repair and restore the military vehicles of the 20th century to help teach and guide our future generations about the evolution of technology and warn them about the harsh realities of war. My time in the arts has helped me gain a strong

Where would you most like to attend college and what might your major be? I would most like to attend college at NC School of the Arts and I would like to major in Visual Arts.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment would probably be (in my opinion) a three-piece drawing I did of girls representing “See no Evil, Hear no evil, Speak no evil.” To me, they are really interesting and creative.

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts will (hopefully) have a major influence in my future career because I hope to pursue digital animation or possibly work as an illustrator.
