Student Artist of the Month: April 2017

In partnership with Forsyth County high schools and Windsor Jewelers, The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is proud to present the Student Artist of the Month.

All Forsyth County high schools (private, public, and charter) that have arts programming were invited to participate in the Student Artist of the Month program. Arts educators and administrators from each school will select one student each month for recognition based on academic rigor and artistic merit. A variety of arts disciplines will be recognized over the course of the school year.

Sarah Hanlon

Atkins Academic & Technology High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about chorus is that I get to express myself using creativity.  I also love how practicing is just as exciting as performing, especially when I have a solo. I always feel a sort of adrenaline rush when I perform, and it always makes me really happy to see how proud my parents are of me after the group is finished performing.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would really like to go to Appalachian State, because I really like the campus, and they have a good biology major. I would major in biology, and then after finishing up that I want to go to medical school to become a pediatric surgeon.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is when I got a big solo last year at our last performance. The solo lasted the entire song, and I loved the music style of it, so I really enjoyed performing it.

How will the arts influence your future career? I’m still not sure how the arts are going to influence my future career, but I know that I’ll never stop singing, even just for enjoyment. I love it too much just to stop.

 

Angelina Bassi

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I absolutely love performing, because when I sing, I feel empowered.  Every time I perform, I am filled with excitement and adrenaline in getting to share my love for music.  Performing is the only real way I can truly express myself. I experience pure joy when singing, and I’ve finally found what I’m meant to do.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I have many colleges in mind, but I have not made a final decision yet.  I’m planning on majoring in theatre and minoring in music.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? In February, I audition for UNCSA’s high school voice program.  I am proud to say, I have been put on a waiting list to be accepted into the school.  It was my first BIG audition and I’m genuinely proud of the outcome.

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts have given me the desire to pursue a career in music and theatre.  I am now able to chase my dreams due to the amazing teachers that have influenced and encouraged me.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love being able to lead others in worship by putting the words on the screen so they can worship the amazing God that I worship. I also love putting mics on people during musicals at our school because it allows me to get to interact with people and maybe even share the Gospel with them.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I plan to attend Johnson & Wales University in Charlotte NC and I plan on majoring in culinary arts.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest accomplishment is this year I was the manager of mics in our musical this year and also I got asked to run graphics for the 8:00 service at my church.

How will the arts influence your future career? The art of running graphics and being the manager for mics will help me because it taught me how to function under stress and working in the culinary field is very stressful. It also has taught me how to interact with people on a different level than just being friends.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I really enjoy learning how to create dances and rehearsals leading up to performance.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would like to go to A&T eventually I would like to be a Veterinarian, I love working with Animals.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Performing on stage is when I feel the proudest, because I get to show others how much I have been working and what I have learned.

How will the arts influence your future career? Collaboration is the word that comes to mind when I think about how dance will influence my future career. Dance really teaches me how to work with others solving problems together.

 

Alexy Servello

East Forsyth High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of theatre is just being on stage and being able to tell the audience the story.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would like to attend AMDA/AADA in new York City to major in Theatre.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment would be playing the Wicked Witch from the iconic film/play The Wizard of Oz. It was the most challenging role for me but at the same time a lot of fun.

How will the arts influence your future career? The Arts will influence my future career for the rest of my life because if I am not on stage performing I would like to teach Theatre, so no matter where my path leads Theatre and the Arts will always be a part of my life.

 

Marriott Battle

Forsyth Country Day School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love the feeling I get when I step onstage and I’m a completely different character with different thoughts and habits. I love changing characters and learning about every new character I am given.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I will be attending Liberty University this fall, hopefully majoring in musical theatre performance.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I’ve done shows after family members died, outdoor theatre in the rain, and understudied the day of. My favorite role so far has been Mary in The Secret Garden.

How will the arts influence your future career? I want to do theatre for the rest of my life. I want to be able to look out to an audience and perform for them. Theatre has shaped me and saved me and I am so blessed to be able to say I am an actress.

 

Chase Earnhardt

Glenn High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I like the concerts, Music Performance Adjudications, field trips and competitions in both band and chorus, but, most of all, I love performing for the community and realizing that our performances change the way people look at Glenn High School and at teenagers.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Embry Riddle Aeronautical University to major in aerospace engineering.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? First chair tuba – all district band.

How will the arts influence your future career? I feel like the arts has given me a creative mind that will help me in the engineering career. Music has always been and will always be a way to escape the stresses of my life. With music, I can continue to be the happy person that I’ve always been.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part is drawing with a pencil and using a Q-tip to smooth to make texture on my drawing. It expresses yourself in drawing. You can express yourself by drawing your life or how you feel.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? The college I want to attend is UNC of Chapel Hill. I want to be the first person in my family to go to college.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is blending by using a Q-tip to smooth out my drawings.

How will the arts influence your future career? It will influence my future by showing my drawings to the world or all the people by telling them you can use any tools to make art.

 

Hannah Guffey

Mount Tabor High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part is being able to wind down and relax while in the process of creating a piece of art.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? UNC Charlotte, Architecture.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I was given an award for a cut paper landscape I did of New York City and won second place in Piedmont Federal Art show. 

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts will help me in my career by having that part of my brain and imagination that will always bring me Zen and that ability to create and feel through something without using words.

 

Kailey Russell

North Forsyth High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite thing about dance is being able to express myself through unique movements.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I am planning to attend UNCW and pursue a major in exercise science with a minor in dance.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is either being able to participate twice in the WSFCS Dance Honors Society Arts Benefit concert (proceeds benefit the Arts for Life program), or having the opportunity to perform solos twice.

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts will influence my career because I plan to minor in dance, and dance has given me a sense of happiness I wouldn’t have found if I didn’t begin to dance.

 

Libby Brown

Reagan High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? In dance you learn to speak with movements instead od words, giving you a much deeper connection with the audience because dance is a universal language.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would like to attend Appalachian in the fall.  I plan to major in elementary education and possibly minor in dance.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I think my proudest artistic accomplishment was being asked to perform my honors piece with my wonderful friends in a showcase.

How will the arts influence your future career? I am someone who strongly believes that everyone has a purpose, its only a matter of discovering your passion.  I hope that as a teacher, I can use dance to encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and discover what makes them unique.

 

Ava Foster

Reynolds High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love being able to make people happy. When I can sing beautifully composed music and make people laugh in the process. It’s a great feeling!.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Right now I am really liking UT Austin. I have  time to figure things out of course, but I would perhaps like to major in an environmental science or social science field and minor in some type of music production.

 What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is the social skills I have developed working both with others and individually.

 How will the arts influence your future career? I hope the arts continue to have an impacting relationship with my future career, whatever that may be. Music is what makes me the happiest and in a world of so much political, ecological and social tension, it is essential to learn an art for a sense of unity.

 

Laura Browne

Salem Academy

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? Theatre has always been an incredible experience for me not only because it gives you the opportunity to express your emotions, but it also helps you to meet new people and make new friends. The main advantage of participating in theatre is that it allows one to have the ability to enlighten and entertain others while having fun.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Next year, I will be attending UNC Asheville and plan on majoring in Mass Communications.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I am probably most proud of my most recent role as Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s dream because I put a lot of effort into making the role realistic. I worked hard to get to know the actress playing Hermia (Lysander’s love interest) and even wrote her love letters as my character. I had so much fun with all of the cast and crew, and was so pleased with the way the show turned out.

How will the arts influence your future career? Although I don’t plan on incorporating theatre into my career, skills I have learned from theatre like public speaking and teamwork will help contribute to what I want to do.

 

Jinho Kang

UNCSA

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about music is that every piece has a story inside them. Whenever I play the piano, I tell a story full of drama and emotion, whether it be a tragic hero’s tale in Chopin’s Ballades, a dance with the devil in Lizst’s Mephisto Waltz, or anything else I want the story to be.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I will be attending Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York as a Piano Performance Major.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Although I’ve performed in various concerts and competitions, my proudest performance is when I play in an annual summer concert with my quartet formed of my friends at the Carol Woods Community Center in Chapel Hill.

How will the arts influence your future career? I hope to become a concert pianist someday and perform in various places over the world. I also have a passion for teaching, and hope to teach piano to many students.

 

Leah Ohm

West Forsyth High School

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of theatre is that moment when you go up to take your bow and realize everything you have accomplished as a part of the show, all of the memories you have made and how you will cherish them forever.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? Although I still have some time to make a final decision, my plan is to attend Liberty University.  I would like to major in Policy and Politics and have a minor in Theatre Arts.  That sounds like quite a combination but I love history and politics almost as much as I love the theatre!

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is getting a supporting role in an upcoming production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

How will the arts influence your future career? Theatre has make me a more fun-loving and confident person overall.  I used to be really shy and timid, especially around new people.  Theatre has helped me to be a lot more confident in who I am.  That confidence is something I will take with me, and that will lead me to success, in any career I choose.
