What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of dance is how it shows every part of art. What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about painting is how it is so versatile and malleable. I can use different types of paint, brushes, and technique to make completely different pieces that are unique to me, and I think that that is just such a cool concept.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I have already decided that I am going to attend UNC Charlotte next year. I am planning on my major being Studio Art, and although I am not certain yet, I am leaning towards a concentration in illustration.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is recently being in my school’s winter art show. I saw this as my proudest accomplishment because the 3 paintings I made were my favorite pieces I have ever made, and having a bunch of people get to see my art was such an amazing opportunity

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts are something I want to have in my life for years to come, and I think that I actually want to pursue a career in some type of visual art. At the moment I am particularly interested in animation, but I am open to whatever artistic passion drives me.

Katherine Angell

Forsyth Country Day

Head of School: Gardner Barrier

SAM Coordinator: John Kildahl

Nominating Teacher: Andrew Hayes

Arts Discipline: Theatre Arts

Grade: 10

GPA/QPA: 4.0

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love the people. Performing is always amazing. I feel like each time I step on stage, I’m returning to a part of who I am. But the people that I meet, befriend, and act with are the real reason that I keep coming back to theatre. Each cast becomes a family of misfits and comes together despite differences and conflicts to make something beautiful. I know my cast will be there for me and support me because we are all working towards the same thing and all find a safe place to embrace our passions together.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? To be perfectly honest, I have no idea. I am interested in many different possibilities, and I have not delved into the process enough yet to be able to say where I want to be or what I want to do.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I would have to say playing Buddy in The Diviners has been my proudest accomplishment. I was not expecting to be playing a boy when I showed up for auditions. From the beginning, I was excited, incredibly flattered, and extremely nervous. Not only was I playing a boy, but I would also be playing a character with brain damage, severe aqua phobia, and intense emotional trauma. I was terrified of doing it wrong. I wanted to do justice to an incredible character and act with sensitivity and empathy in regard to the mature and complex themes of the show. I usually say that I did my job if I am able to make someone cry because that means I was able to create something real and personal for someone. The role of Buddy challenged me personally as an actor and a person, and I am so incredibly proud and grateful that I got the honor of being Buddy even if it was only for a short time.

How will the arts influence your future career? While I am not sure where my life is going or what role the arts will take in it, I do know that the arts have been a priceless part of my life. Whether it is sketching something to wind down after a long day or placing myself inside a character’s life, the expression and empathy that I’ve learned from the arts will always be with me. I plan to continue participating in shows in some form for the rest of my life. The world of theatre has always been a safe house for me. The theatre is a place to laugh and cry without holding back.

Arts Discipline: Visual Art

GPA/QPA: 3.57

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about 2D art is the ability to manipulate and create something better than what I started with. I am currently finishing an AP Art Portfolio which features altered photographs of my sister, who dances ballet. I have redesigned her outfits using prints and patterns I have collected through my travels around the world and my love for style.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I actually know where I will be attending college! I am excited to announce that next year I will be heading to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). I plan to study my absolute favorite subject: Fashion Management and Marketing!

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is definitely my AP Portfolio which I have created this year. I have put so much time into perfecting the 24 pieces I have to send for scoring that it is going to be hard for me to let it go! The fact that I can feature my sister and explore fashion even further makes me that much more happy with how it has turned out.

How will the arts influence your future career? Arts will be the core of my future career because I want to work in a fashion field. In five years I hope to be living in New York City and working at either a small PR firm or a magazine company, building my way up to the corporate level. I will be able to use my art knowledge to make decisions about color, texture, and really all the elements and principles that I have learned throughout my many years of art.

Alexa Novell

UNCSA

SAM Coordinator: Brian Cole

Nominating Teacher: Kelly Maxner

Arts Discipline: Drama

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 3.7

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? The stage allows us to become the voice of the voiceless: the people who need to be heard. We often only glance at each other long enough to look, not long enough to see. Theatre puts life under a microscope, and through it we are able to truly understand and witness  life’s fleeting moments and the people living in them.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I’ve been accepted to Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers  University which is where I’ll most likely be attending  to work towards my BFA in Acting.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Being accepted into UNCSA’s high school conservatory.  I am continuously honored to collaborate with the endlessly talented and devoted artists living on this campus.

How will the arts influence your future career? I am pursuing a career in acting. Yet, I am confident that the arts will enrich my life reguardless of the path I take. Theatre has taught me how to put myself in another’s shoes and to see life through their eyes, which is invaluable.

Jasmine Ashford

Walkertown

Principal: Jay Jones

SAM Coordinator: Quincy Lundy

Nominating Teacher: Krista Justice

Arts Discipline: Dance

Grade: 11

GPA/QPA: 4.4

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of dance is the technique behind the movements. Technique is what separates a great dancer from an average dancer. A dancer’s technique is the most important thing in my opinion to artistic success. Although technique is not a God-given talent, it is something that is earned from dedication.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I plan on furthering my education at UNC Chapel Hill in the fall of 2018. I will major in the pre-health program. The next step will be attending UNC Chapel Hill’s medical school for my pediatrician license. The final step will be becoming a fully licensed family practice pediatrician.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? Dance comes with a lot of failure but also a lot of trophies and medals. As a competitive dancer, my proudest accomplishment would be getting the highest score award at TaDa Competition in Smithfield, North Carolina. Out of 33 groups, my jazz team outscored other routines in the genres of tap, hip hop, contemporary and jazz.

How will the arts influence your future career? Dance has influenced my career in different ways. As a dancer on a team, it is not about you; it is about the best interest of the entire team. Whereas in the medical field, it is about the best interest of the patient. Dance has improved my social interaction skills, which is definitely a necessity for a medical field career.

Arts Discipline: Band/Orchestra

GPA/QPA: 4.7

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of Band/Orchestra are the relationships that you make with other musicians. The connection you have with the people you make music with is like no other; you are bonded together through the mutual love of music.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? As of right now, I would love to attend Elon University and major in business or pre-law and minor (or double major) in music.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I have two accomplishments that I am most proud of and cannot choose between them! Being selected as the Drum Major of West Forsyth’s marching band and being accepted into Governor’s School West for the 2017 Session. I have worked very hard for both accomplishments and I am honored to be Drum Major for my junior and senior year and to be one of seven flautists for Governor’s School.

How will the arts influence your future career? Music will always be a part of my life. I am hoping to find a way to incorporate music into whatever my future career is. I want to always be a member of an ensemble and I wish to pass along my love of music to other people.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part about theater is the acting! It shows off everything that we have learned! Its super fun and it allows us to be something that we are not!

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I’m considering Spelman University in Atlanta Georgia. I would love to major in Education and become a post-secondary educator.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My successful monologue scene this fall. Simply because, that was my first time acting and I feel like I was one of the top performers of the night!

How will the arts influence your future career? At this point I don’t see any current connections between the arts and my future field. However, I will still dabble in theater for fun.
