Nominating Teacher: Janet Blakely

Arts Discipline: Visual Arts

Grade: 9

GPA/QPA: 4.4

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of art is being able to create pieces. It’s fun to be able to just work on a piece for hours at a time and still not be bored of doing it. And then when you are finally done with it, it’s so exciting to see your work completely finished.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I am not sure which college I want to attend but I would like to go into psychology. From there I want to go to med school and become a psychiatrist.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest art accomplishment is when I got my art put into the SECU house when I was in Middle School.

How will the arts influence your future career? The arts will influence my future career because they help me to be more creative. And working as a psychiatrist, you have to find new and creative ways to help your patients.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite discipline is mixed media because I can bring together multiple seemingly unlikely styles to make one cohesive piece of art.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I am going to Fashion Institute of Technology for fashion design.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment is one of the clothing collection I designed for my college application portfolio. Outside versus inside appearance is the theme of this collection, and the inspiration comes from a news report I saw on an American biker gang standing up for children suffering from domestic violence.  In the collection, I show a series of strong contrast by mixing the traditional Biker style and baby style, fabric’s texture, and the meaning itself’s controversy between the “soft” inside and sharp edge outside to support my main theme. The idea of chiffon princess skirt that frequently appears in this collection comes from Beauty and the Beast. I find this Disney movie matches my theme, because first, the movie’s main audiences are kids, and second is that the beast is just like our bikers who might seem a little violent or crazy, but underneath their skin they have a warm and pure heart like kids, and the ability and desire to love and help others. Sometimes kindness and compassion can be found in the least expected places.

How will the arts influence your future career? Since I will be attending fashion school in the future and may become a designer after I graduate. I will definitely use the skills and techniques I learned from Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School into my future efforts of art and design.

Payton Parker

UNCSA

Dean: Brian Cole

Nominating Teacher: Glenn Siebert

Arts Discipline: Vocal Music

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 3.9

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love getting to work with such gifted students and watch myself learn from them, whether it be listening to my peers sing in master classes or watch the operas that the School of Music, the A. J. Fletcher Opera Institute, and the Piedmont Opera gets to put on. The amount of time that I’ve been given to work with my amazing teacher, Glenn Siebert, has also played a huge part in helping my voice grow exponentially.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I will be attending East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, with a Major in Music, a concentration in Vocal Performance, and a Minor in Piano. I really want to travel to Italy or Germany for grad school, too.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? When I first arrived at UNCSA, I had really bad performance anxiety, so for the past two years I’ve been working with my voice teacher and a therapist about improving my confidence and stage presence. At the end of this past semester, I got the chance to sing a few solo pieces in a recital, and it was a lot of fun! I think getting the courage and making the choice to face my fears will help me gain more control of my emotions in a performance, and I can’t wait to be a part of more shows and recitals in the future.

How will the arts influence your future career? Attending the School of the Arts has really helped me develop an excellent foundation for my voice as a young singer. Since I live on campus as well, I’ve gotten to see and work with students of other arts majors, so I’ve gotten to learn a lot more about other aspects of the performing and visual arts. I’ve also made a lot of wonderful connections with my peers and instructors, and getting to have a one-on-one relationship with so many great people will help me reach new goals I have for myself career-wise. Since attending a school that focuses primarily on the arts, I have a deeper admiration and respect for those who have become successful in the art world because I know just how tough it is to work and thrive in an arts-intensive environment.

Cecilia Okafor

Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy

Principal: Richard Watts

Nominating Teacher: Paul Evans, Renee Phifer, Diamond Gaither, Shanice Bullock McKinney

Arts Discipline: Visual, Chorus, Dance

Grade: 11

GPA/QPA: 3.5

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I was nominated through the visual arts discipline. However, I am apart of visual arts, chorus and dance. I like them all due to the fact that I am able to express myself. In visual art, I feel as if I can be more creative and I have more control over expressing my creativity.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? AI don’t have a specific college yet. However, I have narrowed it down to three Historically Black Colleges or Universities. They are North Carolina Central University, North Carolina Agricultural & Technical Institute, and Winston Salem State University. I would like to be a lawyer, so I will most likely major in Journalism or Political Science.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? I actually have two artistic accomplishments that I am very proud of! The first one is my Zentagle! It was selected for the Artizans exhibit. This was rewarding because I feel as if my hard work was being appreciated. I didn’t receive 1st place but I am super proud of my work and honored that I was selected by Mr. Evans. I am also very proud of my choreographic work last year that made it all the way to the Student Choreography Showcase! It was my first time choreographing anything!

How will the arts influence your future career? In Chorus and Dance I have been able to grow in each department and become a stronger leader. I’ve had to learn how to exhibit those qualities and set an example for the students in the lower level classes. This is my first year in Visual Art and it has really pushed me to think outside of the box and find my voice artistically. I am very thankful for being selected to be this month’s Student Artist of the Month.

The Arts Council would like to thank music teacher, Danny Green, who not only initiated the Student Artist of the Month program, but is serving as the volunteer liaison between the Arts Council and the schools for this project.
