Valerie Stanley

Atkins Academic & Technology High School

Principal: Joe Childers

Nominating Teacher: Janet Blakely

Arts Discipline: Visual Arts

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 3.8

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected?  My favorite part of visual arts is that it allows you to actually create something of your own ideas. Most of the time, when people get an idea in their head, they try to express it some way. Visual arts allows me to take pencil to paper and create what I see in my head without having to be restricted within the medium one way or another. It also allows me to take those ideas and draw them digitally with a graphics tablet, which combines my love for computers with my love for drawing.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major?  I hope to get accepted to University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) and major in Filmmaking, specifically Animation.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment?  My proudest artistic accomplishment would be watching my artistic talent grow over the years and finally reaching a stage where I can comfortably draw in a way that I like how it looks days later from the initial drawing. It may be small and pale in comparison to many others’, but knowing that I’m growing as an artist and not hitting a wall is an accomplishment tome and motivates me to continue working.

How will the arts influence your future career?  Art is mostly what is driving my future, honestly. If I do manage to get accepted to UNCSA, I hope to get at least get a BFA in Animation and maybe continue for Graduate degrees there too. Most of my love for animation is from my own enjoyment and desire to one day create my own animations, but I’ve heard that many people who graduated from UNSCA get jobs for studio facilities afterwards. I don’t know how likely that may be in the future, but hopefully I can make money off of doing something I enjoy, which is a feat not often easily achieved in today’s society.

Audrey MacDonald

Bishop McGuinness High School

Principal: Tracy Shaw

Nominating Teacher: Martha Garrett

Arts Discipline: Visual Arts

Grade: 11

GPA/QPA: 4.46

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of my art genre, visual arts, is using unique new materials. I love experimenting with new media, such as canté crayons, micro pens, and gouache, all of which I had not used until my art class at Bishop McGuinness. Using new media provides an interesting challenge to the way I normally do things. Instead of using typical materials such as watercolor and colored pencil, I am faced with new materials to work with. These new media are difficult to control, yet the end result is all the more satisfying for that difficulty.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would most like to attend college at Wake Forest University, and would like to major in biology.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment was a piece that I completed in my sophomore year: an artist chair. This is a chair that is entirely covered in a famous artist’s work, which one then paints onto the chair. I painted, using acrylic, the intriguing Big Ben (1905) by Andre Derain, a beautiful piece of art which depicts Big Ben and a dazzling, blue-green sky behind it. The unique style of fauvism which Andre Derain uses makes this piece simply unforgettable, and to be able to capture some of that beauty in a chair that now sits in my house was an accomplishment that I take pride in.

How will the arts influence your future career? I plan on continuing to paint and draw alongside my main career; I love these activities and am determined to keep them as a solid part of my daily life.

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite discipline is mixed media because I can bring together multiple seemingly unlikely styles to make one cohesive piece of art.

How will the arts influence your future career? I most likely will not pursue photography as a career, but it will definitely stay a hobby of mine. I’m given quite a bit of unique opportunities to capture photos and I hope that those opportunities will be available in the future.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? My top school is Savannah College of Art and Design. As of now I think I want to work in Fibers.

Hopefully in the future I’ll be the best artist I know I can be and just get trying to get even better.

Nominating Teacher: Steven McCarthy

Arts Discipline: Visual Art

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 4.1

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? I love all types of art genres, I’m not very proficient in many, but I still like to try and give it my best. What I really enjoyed on my pastel resist project was how I applied the oil pastel and the paint over the paper. I also enjoyed peeling off the acrylic paint and seeing the texture left both on the strip I peeled and on the paper. I loved how some colors blended to make new ones. I found that to be very inspiring.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I’d love to attend North Carolina A&T and major in something within the Criminal Justice department like Criminology.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment right now would be the Pastel Resist I did of my grandpa and my uncle. I made it for my mother, I was going to give it to her on Valentines Day. However, the smaller details took longer and so it became a birthday present instead.

How will the arts influence your future career? Art influences me all the time and for my future career I think that it will be a bigger influence as well. I tend to find small details in the smallest objects. Noticing details can be very important in some of the careers I have in mind. Creativity is also very important to my future career. I think I am creative thanks to my love and interest in art.

Nominating Teacher: Jennifer Willard

Arts Discipline: Independent Study

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 4.66

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of visual arts is getting to know who I am through the different styles and perspectives of individual pieces. They are all different and in the end my art is just a glimpse of who I am as a whole. I like to see my persona, without manipulation from the outside world, come to be on a canvas.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I wish to attend The University of California, Long Beach and I plan to pursue an art based major along with a Business major.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artist accomplishment would be receiving both a gold and a silver key in the Scholastics art program. Attending the Goldkey ceremony at Carnegie Hall in NYC was surreal and having had that opportunity assured me that my future as an artist is positive. I believe everything great in one’s life is only reached with an abundance of passion.

How will the arts influence your future career? I will try my hardest to ensure a career in the arts. As an artist I will constantly be creating, even if it branches off from my future career, because making art keeps me true to my self and it’s a form of self-expression no one can withhold or silence.

Isaac Cooper

Reynolds High School

Principal: Leslie Alexander

Nominating Teacher: Johnathan Hamiel

Arts Discipline: Band

Grade: 11

GPA/QPA: 4.3

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite aspect about practicing music is to talk with other people who like music and have this immediate connection with other musicians around music; it’s great.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I am in between colleges at the moment.  I am looking at Brown University, Wesleyan College, and UNC Chapel Hill.  I would like to double major in macroeconomics and trumpet performance.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment?  My proudest achievement as a musician was making the National Honor Band.  I was originally an alternate trumpet, so when Mr. Hamiel told me that I was going to Orlando for the clinic last month, I was beyond excited.  The first thing I did was call my mom.

How will the arts influence your future career?  I will forever hold a place for music in my heart.  The discipline has taught me many things about life in general.  I do not know exactly what I want to do after college, but I do know I want the trumpet somewhere in my life.

Cynthia Bian

Salem Academy

Head of School: Mary Lorick Thompson

Nominating Teacher: Maria Robinson

Arts Discipline: Visual Art

Grade: 12

GPA/QPA: 3.95

What is your favorite part of the arts genre in which you were selected? My favorite part of the arts genre is anime. I grew up watching Japanese anime and reading comic books. The unrealistic yet dramatic style of anime effectively draws people’s attention and presents amiable impressions. After watching many anime, like “Doraemon,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” and “Spirited Away,” during my childhood, anime was the first art genre that fascinated me and led me to become an artist. My passion to draw my favorite anime characters motivated me to fall in love with drawing in the first place. As I grew up and learned more drawing techniques and genres, my passion for anime still burns.

Where would you most like to attend college and what might be your major? I would most like to attend college at Georgetown University, Pomona College, or Tufts University. My major might be International Relations because I am truly fascinated with the diplomatic relations between each state and the political issues of the world.

What is your proudest artistic accomplishment? My proudest artistic accomplishment was my artistic breakthrough during middle school. I used to only be able to draw the cute comics and anime. Since I learned to sketch, I discovered my capability to draw objects and people in realistic ways with textures and values. I am proud of the breakthrough because it significantly impacted my artistic style and interests.

How will the arts influence your future career? Arts will indirectly influence my future career by offering me a perspective to attentively view and observe the things and people around me. I aspire to work in a ThinkTank or the UN dealing with global issues as my future career. These works all require the skills to be cautious toward world issues. Through sketching live drawings and taking photographs, I am inspired to carefully observe and appreciate the details of environments, which would eventually provide for a solid foundation.
